The Windows NT 4.0 released in April 1996 is a milestone in the NT family, primarily designed for workstations, network servers and large-scale computers. Windows NT (short for New Technology) is a pure 32-bit operating system, using the advanced NT core technology. That’s why it only lived for one year before being replaced by Windows XP. Although it improved support for multimedia and hardware devices, and added some new features, its poor stability and reliability meant that quite a few older DOS programs cannot run on it. It was developed based on Windows 9x, and aimed primarily at families and individuals.
Windows ME (short for Windows Millennium Edition) was launched in 2000.
The more collectible version is, of course, the Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) released in 1999, which includes a series of improvements on the basis of Windows 98. It is the most widely used operating system after DOS, Windows 3.x and Windows 95. It is faster, more stable, and more powerful than Windows 95 in functionality, security and many other aspects. Windows 98 is a 16-bit + 32-bit hybrid operating system that was released in 1998, which is essentially an improved version of Windows 95. In addition, it has a fresh-new graphical user interface, improving the OS’s learnability, usability and efficiency. Although some 16-bit code (such as user.exe and gdi.exe) still exists in Windows 95, most of the code is 32-bit. On August 24, 1995, Microsoft released Windows 95, which is the first 32-bit operating system that does not require DOS to be installed first. Of course, many people would prefer the more full-fledged Windows 3.1 (released in 1992) that was to address the shortcomings of Windows 3.0 as Microsoft’s cross-generational work.
